BRIGHT BEINGS

A story and testimony of how stigma and abandonment can become friendship and family.

THE SITUATION

When friends, Bec, a photographer and Georgia, a publisher, travelled to India, they were connected with an orphanage in South Central region, ‘Chandrakal; Hope of Hope’. Founded in 2008, their sole purpose is caring for HIV-positive orphans. Through laughter, tears, and an overwhelming sense of hope, the duo spent a day photographing and interviewing the children and their carers, with the intent to produce a book, to raise awareness of the orphanage. All proceeds of the book go directly to Chandrakal to help the children further their education.

THE SOLUTION

To establish the book’s purpose and place on the cover, we designed a bespoke mandala encasing the title typography, and printed in gold foil. The mandala and typography have a sense of something lovingly hand crafted, to echo the heart and intent of the orphanage. Patterns and symbols inspired by traditional Indian art, dance around the pages in gold ink, framing quotes and stories from the children and carers. Using a flexible grid for the page layout, every spread is different and responds to the energy of the image, but ensures a sense of flow and consistency throughout.

An example of how a thoughtful and crafter print design can bring people and places to life.
